Immigration frequently denotes the process of coming to the host country with the purpose of staying there. In juridical discourse, the emphasis is placed on the legality of immigration, which is characterized by differences in objectives: education/ science; family reunification; work; business; migration of scientific/research activities. Most often, immigrants are immigrating to Lithuania for work purposes, and only a small percentage of arrivals are immigrants who have come for educationbased purposes. The most massive proportion of those who come to study are Indian citizens, but after graduation and gaining a high qualification, individuals move to live in other countries. The empirical study was based on qualitative data, based on interviews from 2020. The results of the study reveal that factors leading to integration into the labour market are these: the possibility to learn Lithuanian language/courses; optimising the services of employment agencies for English-speaking immigrants; improvement of the role of alma mater (higher education institutions) in the integration of students into the labour market (job search/mentoring); skilled workers wage increase. However, from the very beginning of their arrival in Lithuania, immigrants face restrictions and discriminatory legal loopholes that inhibit their professional / working potential, self-expression and integration into the labour market itself. |
