The phenomenon of working poor is one of the major challenges that the modern society has been facing in the past several decades. The aim of the article is to analyse the phenomenon of in-work poverty, its prevalence and root causes and to discuss the main measures aimed at reducing in-work poverty in Lithuania.The analysis of recent data has shown that people whose work intensity is low are among those who have the highest risk of in-work poverty in Lithuania. In other words, these are the people who experience longer periods of unemployment during the course of the year. This situation is mainly due to low income as well as low efficiency of unemployment benefit system in Lithuania that doesn’t protect individuals in case of losing a job. In addition to low work intensity, single-parent households with children and employees in atypical employment are among those who experience higher risk of in-work poverty in Lithuania. The analysis also showed that there are no special measures aimed at reducing in-work poverty in Lithuania. |
