Abstract [eng] |
ABSTRACT: The article presents results of research on work migrants‘ work and living conditions in Lithuania that was carried out in 2014–2015 by the Lithuanian Social Research Centre and NGO Diversity Development Group . The main research data comes from the survey of work migrants (citizens of non-EU coutries) (N=321). The research results show that majority of migrants, coming to Lithuania to work, are young men with professional qualifi cation, who are citizens of neighbouring countries – Ukraine and Belarus. Majority of work migrants in Lithuania are employed in transportation sector as long distance truck drivers. The quality of work place (i.e. balancing life and work commitments, wage rate, safety at work, etc.) differs among surveyed work migrants and depends on the economic sector, in which migrants are employed. Survey results show that work migrants do not have sufficient information on social security system in Lithuania and rarely apply for employee benefi ts. Work migrants in Lithuania have weak social networks and only limited access to social services in the host country. In order to reduce the vulnerability and risk of exploitation of work migrants in Lithuanian labour market it is important to increase accessibility of services provided by trade unions and to strengthen cooperation of trade unions and NGOs in provision of social services to migrants. |
