Abstract [eng] |
Machismo can be analysed in the frame of both concepts of doing gender in everyday interaction with others (Candace West & Don Zimmerman) and gender displays - a performance/masquerade/ritual where people "play" their gender (Erving Goffman). Public representation of masculinity-femininity iconically reflects fundamental features of the social structure. hi feminist and pro-feminist approaches machismo is usually used synonymously with sexism. At the same time a control of women is less important although significant in the performance of machismo. A woman may make a substantial contribution, even crucial, to the fight between men for symbolical or real power however she is usually not a central factor in the strategy of legitimisation of masculinity. |
