The article deals with the wholesale and retail prices of Lithuanian eggs and their changes. The price impact on the production and demand of eggs is analysed. Lately the economic and financial recession caused changes in many sectors. The market of eggs also experienced the changes. In 2009 both trade indicators and the price level in the egg sector fluctuated. Due to relatively high wholesale prices of Lithuanian eggs, the demand for eggs on the foreign markets is declining already for a few years running. It causes lesser amount of production. However, in contrary to the EU average, in Lithuania the wholesale price of eggs in 2009 decreased in comparison with the past year. The main reason for the decrease was lower prices of poultry feeds – the most important segment of egg production costs. Besides, foreign competitors also force to decrease the prices. Following the decreasing wholesale price the retail price also is going down. As a result, the consumption of eggs in the domestic market has increased. |
