The article deals with the pricing of meat and meat products in Lithuania and the related trends and problems on the domestic and foreign markets in January-September 2009. The economic crisis, a rather significant increase of VAT, the depreciation of the zloty had a considerable impact on the changes in the Lithuanian meat sector. The sales of meat and meat products on the domestic market went down. The purchased amounts of cattle and pigs declined. The amounts of beef export were on the same level, and those of pigs increased by one third. The purchase prices of cattle declined sharply and in September the gap between the average pričeš in Lithuania and the EU accounted for 40%. Average purchase prices of pigs changed slightly and were higher than the average of neighbour countries and the EU. The increase of VAT had almost no influence on the retail prices because of the competitive prices of Polish meat. |
