Abstract [eng] Agriculture and food sector accounts for 7.4% of the total gross value-added created in the Lithuanian economy, comprises more than 14% of the total foreign trade turnover, guarantees workplaces for nearly one tenth of the employed population. Aiming to increase the competitiveness of agriculture, to support farmers’ income, to reduce social disjuncture between rural and urban population, to save the environment, economic entities are supported from the EU and national budgets. In 2011 the funds for agriculture made up LTL 2,728 million i. e. 5% more than in 2010. In 2011 the export of agricultural and food products totalled LTL 11,565 million (19.5% more than in 2010), while the import amounted to LTL 9,568 million (19.9% more). Starting 2004 (when Lithuania joined the EU) the balance of foreign trade of agricultural and food products was positive. In 2011, as compared to 2010, it increased by LTL 264 million and reached LTL 1,997 million. In 2007-2011 the number of agricultural entities by categories was changing unevenly. In 2011, as compared to 2007, the number of registered family farms went up by 10.0% and, as compared to 2010, increased by 2.2%. With reference to the data of declarations, over the abovementioned period the number of agricultural companies and other enterprises increased by 25.3%, while the number of holdings went down by 20.0%. The average farm size of agricultural entities that declared UAA in 2011was 16.3 ha, or by 4.5% larger than in 2010 and by 21.6% more than in 2007. In 2011 the certified organic area in Lithuania occupied 158 thousand hectares, or accounted for 5.6% of the total UAA declared. The average size of certified farm (including fishery farms) increased from 55.9 ha (in 2010) to 60.8 ha (in 2011). The total land area by land category was almost stable.
