Abstract [eng] The paper deals with crop, dairy and mixed farms of the optimal size. A conception of a farm of the optimal size is presented, and the issue of in what size farm the main production factors, such as capital, land and labour can be used rationally is discussed. The results of research could be used for planning a level of support and development of promising farms. The CAP implementation and support under SPD and RDP measures in 2004–2006 had an important impact on farm structural changes: some farmers gave up unpromising agricultural business; the other increased the utilised agricultural area and production scope. The average farm size in the country during the above-mentioned period increased by 33 percent accounting for 76 percent of the EU-25 average farm and the profit per hec-tare of UAA reached 45 percent of the EU-25 level. The best production results are in the farms that rationally combine utilized agricultural area, agricultural implements and la-bour force. Since the farm can accumulate the capital for the expansion and modernisation of production from the profit and state support, only farms of particular size can do this. As a result, a farm of the optimal size is an important precondition to establish a competitive farm. The calculations were done on a basis of production optimisation model (GAMS) taking into consideration land quality point, production modernisation level and possibility to use EU support. The calculated optimal size of the farm growing cereal... [to full text].
