Abstract [eng] Mortality differentials in Lithuania and other post-Soviet countries are widely analyzed in epidemiological and demographical literature. However, it is very little known about sociological aspects of mortality differentials in different societal levels. The aim of this study is to determine the socio-demographic and socio-economic factors on the contemporary middle-aged men mortality differentials in Lithuania and to reveal the interplay between these factors and unhealthy life style. The theoretical background of the study is based on P. Bourdieu’s theory of practice. The quantitative research was conducted by applying multilevel regression, spatial autocorrelation, and correspondent analysis. Data come from the 2011 census-linked death records of 30-59 year-old men, Statistics Lithuania, and health behavior survey. The qualitative research was conducted by applying narrative analysis to semi-structured interviews. The results of spatial analysis reveals specific middle-aged men mortality pattern in south-eastern part of Lithuania. The results of multilevel analysis show that area-level socio-economic factors have relatively small effect to middle-aged men mortality compared to individual-level factors. The results of correspondent and narrative analysis reveal that unhealthy life style of low socio-economic status men is reproduced by health-damaging habitus trough systems generating perception and practices. This study confirms the prospects of application of P. Bourdieu social practice model in health inequality research.
