Abstract [eng] This chapter presents the analysis of the collected qualitative research data from 54 individual interviews with researchers about their experiences, observations and consequences of gender-based violence in universities. Interview data collected in the frame of the H2020 research project UniSAFE Gender-based violence and institutional response: Building a knowledge base and operational tools to make universities and research organizations safe. In this chapter gender and intersectional theory, as well as feminist violence studies are applied to examine individual stories, incidents or events that may not be regarded as violence from legal definitions, but as patterns of practiced power, domination and inequality in academia. The research findings show that most often victims are likely to suffer psychological violence, gender and sexual harassment, sexual violence, and economic violence. Intersecting inequalities in terms of gender and race/ ethnicity/ migrant status significantly increase the risks of experiencing gender-based violence because of dependency on the supervisor or manager, sexist and racist attitudes and prejudices within universities. Many interviewees reported negative effects on their physical and mental health, personal and professional life that had an impact on their decision to change employment, field of research or leave academia.
